EcoCity Cleveland
celebrates 10 years.

About 200 members and other supporters helped EcoCity Cleveland celebrate its 10th Anniversary at a party on August 29 at Massimo da Milano restaurant in Cleveland.

Board members and staff recounted EcoCity Cleveland's development from a journal to an organization with publications, advocacy programs, and demonstration projects that are influencing regional land use planning, transportation planning, urban design, and state policy.

A highlight of the evening was the announcement of the winners of EcoCity's annual Bioregional Hero Awards. Participants also were able to tour the lower streetcar level of the historic Detroit-Superior Bridge.

Calling EcoCity Cleveland a trusted resource and a "voice of conscience" in the city, Cleveland City Planning Director Chris Ronayne presented a mayoral proclamation honoring EcoCity on its anniversary. The proclamation said in part:

"Whereas, for the past decade, EcoCity Cleveland has been a leading voice for sustainability, livable communities, and regional thinking in Northeast Ohio and has effectively promoted the redevelopment of existing urban areas as well as the preservation of open space through its work on smart growth policies; and

"Whereas, EcoCity Cleveland is dedicated to creating an inspirational vision of cities designed in balance with nature as well as to helping citizens reclaim streets as public places where pedestrians and bicyclists can coexist with cars; and

"Whereas, EcoCity Cleveland's journal and website have not only received national recognition, but have also helped to promote Cleveland as an emerging center for ecological thinking."
